Ecofeminism And Loving Your Mother

By Katiee McKinstry

As I’ve gotten older and learned more about the environment and this wonderful planet we live on, I have incorporated environmentalism into my feminism. Recently I posted on our Funky Feminist Instagram story (@funky_feminist) about Ecofeminism, and some tips and tricks you can do at home to help love your mother earth. I thought I’d share them in an article as well! So, let’s get started.

First of all, what is Ecofeminism? Ecofeminism is a philosophical and political movement that combines ecological concerns with feminist ones, regarding both as resulting from male domination of society. Thus, saving the earth (or at least doing what you can) is part of feminism. What can you do? Keep scrolling for a quick list!

1. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Recycle anything and everything that you can. Glass, plastic, cardboard, paper, cans, etc. Recycling does make a difference, I promise!

2. Use reusable bags, straws, water bottles, etc

To reduce waste, look into reusable items! I got my straws and bags at Wal-Mart. Go out and get yourself a cute water bottle, and help your mother earth.

3. Support Slow Fashion

Slow fashion, brands like Dazey la, produce eco-friendly clothes and accessories. Slow fashion is essentially the choice to purchase better quality items less frequently, which cuts down on cost, maintenance, and waste.

4. Thrift Shopping

Essentially, recycling clothing! Donate your old clothes and grab some new ones while you’re there.

5. Drive a fuel efficient/hybrid/electric car

While we can’t all just go out and purchase a new car, when it is time to get a new one, consider an eco-friendly one.

6. Or, consider public transportation/walking/biking

All of which help!

7. Work from home (if possible)

Working from home is a great way to help the environment, because it’s less time commuting, which uses less gas. Even one day of working at home makes a huge impact!

8. Consider a vegan diet

There are so many environmental impacts from eating plant based. If you only ate vegan for one day a week, you’d still be saving one entire animal’s life. This also means less water being used, less CO2 being released into the air, etc.

9. Purchase Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

Consider brands that are less concentrated in chemicals, don’t test on animals, and that have recyclable packaging. Love Beauty Planet have some of my favorites, and Schmidt’s as well!

With these small strides, you can help love your mother and contribute to the Ecofeminism movement as well. If you’re interested, I can write an article about the benefits of being vegan, or talk with you about this more! Shoot me a DM on Instagram @rosecafletic or leave a comment below!
