15 Easy Ways To Reduce Stress And Practice Self-Care

Our summer schedules often become busy with new plans for vacations and daily obligations. Practicing self-care is a prerequisite to finding joy and living a happy, healthy lifestyle, so don’t forget to slow down this season! Let's give ourselves the love and joy that our bodies need daily.

Below are 15 easy ways you can take some time to engage in self-care. Choose one or more each day that feel most accessible and nurturing for yourself, or even make some changes to find more creative ways that work best!

  1. Give yourself your very own self-hug
    Hugs are powerful! Wrap your arms around yourself and embrace the love that you have for yourself and others. It will make your day.

  2. Write down your own self-care mantra, such as “I am love.”
    Grab a sheet of paper, write down your mantra, and tape it onto your mirror, your journal cover, or any place that you know you will go to everyday so that you can read it to yourself daily.

  3. Meditate.
    Your daily meditation can be as little as five minutes. Sit in a quiet place in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and allow your mind to focus on your breath.

  4. Get active!
    Take a yoga class or attend your favorite exercise classes to get your heart pumping and your body moving. Movement is medicine too.

  5. Go outside.
    Set your alarm to watch the sunrise as you start your morning, or take a stroll to experience what nature has to offer. Going outside, even for a short walk, is crucial to allowing your body to access fresh air and let go of daily stress!

  6. Take deep breaths throughout the day.
    Breathing not only helps you stay calm, but it also helps in letting go of negative tension and invites in new and fresh air for your lungs and for your body.

  7. Start keeping a journal.
    Write down your feelings and express yourself without judgment. Journal your thoughts and reevaluate your goals at the end of the day.

  8. Take a bath.
    Use warm or lukewarm water to avoid drying out the skin, and as a bonus, incorporate epsom salt and lavender oil to help with healing tension and releasing stress.

  9. Go on a self-date.
    Attend the cinemas, go on a hike trail, or window-shop at the mall. Spend some time for yourself to indulge, relax, and have fun.

  10. Listen to your favorite tunes.
    Press play and put on some music that helps you decompress. You can even turn the volume all the way up or dance to the music!

  11. Open your windows in the morning.
    Open up your blinds to welcome in the sun’s rays, and slide your windows open to allow yourself and your room to embrace fresh air. Exposure to natural sunlight, especially in the workplace, can improve your sleep and your overall well-being!

  12. Take a break from your phone.
    Commit to at least 30 minutes daily where you turn off your phone and shift your focus towards engaging in self-care. The texts and phone calls can wait.

  13. Unleash the artist in you.
    Grab your paint brushes, markers, pens, colored pencils, or crayons and get creative! You can even engage in a finger-painting session! Remember that there is no right or wrong in art; it’s for you and for you only, so don’t be afraid to use your imagination!

  14. Laugh lots.
    Think about the things that make you most happy. Read comic strips, watch your favorite comedic sitcom, or spend more time with your friends and family who make you laugh. Laughter not only relieves stress but also strengthens your core too!

  15. Try something new.
    Learn a new language, try a new sport, or visit a place you’ve never been to before. Doing something new can expand your interests and help you find even more activities you love to do!
